We’re Number 6! We’re Number 6!

We’re Number 6! We’re Number 6! originally uploaded by carpe icthus on 13 Jun ‘08, 3.56am CEST PST.

I’ve never been so happy to be in sixth place, but going up against many of the best wedding photographers in the world for the Wedding Photojournalism Association first quarter contest, and it being the first time I’ve ever entered, I’ll definitely take it.

IMHO, Ryan is one of the best photographers on flickr.com delivering constantly very good shoots.

My felicitas!

Database reliability – how are you doing?

The Flickr Memories database has finally been moved to another, now dedicated, database-server last weekend.
So far, I’ve not noticed that the database has had any failures since.
Perhaps, maybe you have. If so, please let me know and leave a comment!
Thank you!

Hosting problems

Dear readers

Please excuse, if the site is not always available.
My hosting company is experiencing problems with their MySql database and they don’t seem capable of fixing that.
I actually don’t know, if there is a real problem or just a lack of competence that they can’t get it fixed. But since these problems are going on for more than a week, I guess it’s the latter of the two choices.

So please be patient and forgiving while things don’t work as expected. And be sure, if things aren’t getting better soon, I’ll be changing to another webhoster who can get his systems working correctly.

A New Beginning

The current year is near it’s end and surely a lot has happened – for some of us more happened, for others less.
But the new year is coming and with it, a new beginning. New things will come and changes will occur. This is the way life goes and it’s all about us, how we deal with it. I hope that you, dear reader, are able to get the best out of whatever may come to you in 2008. I thank you for your support, visiting flickr memories, and enjoying these pictures I’ve found for you!

I wish you a Happy New Year!

Last May, I did some work with the Student Publishing Initiative, a fantastic institution that helps students make their own publications — and we’re talking real, page-turner books, not student newspapers. One of the projects was with Horizon Academy in Rikers Island Jail, and I recently found out that they’re using my work to help convice inmates to go to school.

That is just so unbelievably freaking cool. I also recently completed a project that was the centerpiece of a successful proposal to get a school more than $200 million in badly needed funds, but something about this tugs at my heartstrings even more.

Happy Birthday: Flickr Memories turns 1

Happy Birthday!

Flickr Memories has turned one today. One year ago, everything started with this picture of Rebekka and since then I’ve been posting the most amazing pictures I’ve found on Flickr.
(Of course, most of the great pictures go past me unnoticed, but hey.. it’s a try :-))

eve originally uploaded by _rebekka on 8 Aug ‘05, 3.20pm PST.

Flickr Memories has gone a long way since then, posting quite a number of photos, moving from the formerly domain http://flickr.ifi.ch to the neat http://www.flickr.ch domain.

Thank you, all you readers, silently visiting this blog, and also for the comments some left here and there. Please excuse me for not updating so regularly lately. Time flies and so many things to get done..

I also want to thank Ben aka PhotoSydney for his help posting to FM! from time to time.
If you’re a savvy Flickr user and you’ve somehow interested to give a hand and post to FM! too, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Have fun and don’t forget to come back from time to time! :-)

Tree in winter

Tree in winter originally uploaded by AviatorDave [now admin'ed by gail on the web] on 11 Dec ‘05, 3.39am PST.

Taking in the sunset view.

David L. Fielding passed away December 18, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. This was his last photo. We were on our way home from a short visit to the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, where our 1954 Piper Tri-Pacer was built. (It’s only a museum now, the factory since moved to Florida.)

I stopped the car and asked David to take some photos of the farmhouse and this tree. There wasn’t much of a shoulder, so I couldn’t get out of the car. It was incredibly cold, but he opened the window and carefully framed the shots for me. It was a beautiful sunset, and what turned out to be our last trip together.

A message to Flickr folk: keep taking photographs — they will always increase in personal value.

The Digital Journalist: Unembedded

Kael Alford, BAGHDAD, IRAQ, APRIL 8, 2003 - A man who lost two children and his wife when a missile landed on their house is restrained by a friend at the Kindi Hospital emergency ward in Baghdad.

I just discovered this online magazine called The Digital Journalist following a link there from somewhere.

The December 2005 issue features an article by Phillip Robertson named Unembedded. Robertson writes about how he himself and the four photographers Thorne Anderson, Yassir Jarallah, Rita Leistner and Kael Alford set out to document the “other side”, crossing the lines US Army and Mahdi Army lines on a journey to the old town of Najaf in August 2004.

He tells an important story about humanity and also gives a quick glance on the motivation of the men and children fighting against the US troops.

We walked slowly to the shrine in the old city, past dozens of fighters in black, leaning against the walls with their weapons. It was a moment of relief, of somber triumph. Other photographers and journalists who have risked everything to cover the war from the other side know this feeling well because they have made this crossing or one just like it many times. Fighters on the other side of the street took us in, and there was an innocent, human quality in this moment that I cannot describe even a year later. It would have been easy for them to kill two American journalists, accuse them of being spies, but they did not. Perhaps that is all that needs to be said.

Please read the full article Unembedded, by Phillip Robertson.

There is also a photo gallery along the article showing really great pictures, but beware! - they are not for the weak and definitely won’t leave you light-hearted!

off off and away

off off and away

For all those who wonder why I’m not around at the moment, it’s simply because I’m on vacation until the 16th of December. I’ll be visiting the Lahami Bay Beach Resort in Egypt and hoping for some nice dives over there in the red sea.

During my holidays, Ben|Photosydney will look after this blog, when he finds some time, though he’s quite busy too. So keep your fingers crossed and still check for updates! :-D Thank you Ben!

PriceRitePhoto: Abusive Bait and Switch Camera Store

PriceRitePhotos Supposed "Out of Stock" Camera originally uploaded by Thomas Hawk on 1 Dec ‘05, 12.59pm PST.

“I will make sure you will never be able to place an order on the internet again.” “I’m an attorney, I will sue you.” “I will call the CEO of your company and play him the tape of this phone call.” “I’m going to call your local police and have two officers come over and arrest you.” “You’d better get this through your thick skull.” “You have no idea who you are dealing with.”

These are all direct threats that I received today from an individual who identified himself as Steve Phillips, the manager of PriceRitePhoto in Brooklyn, New York when I called to inquire about my order with them. My crime? Telling him that I planned to write an article about my unfortunate experience with his company regarding the camera order I had placed with him yesterday.

gone for the weekend

Dear readers

I’m going on a diving trip for the weekend with some friends. This means, there probably won’t be any updates ’till sunday evening when I come home again.

By the way, today we’ve reached a 150 posted photographies so far, and something like 200-250 visitors a day!

Also, I was thinking about having a co-author for flickr memories. I’m not quite sure about this yet, but I would appreciate your thoughts on this — So, leave a comment!

So long, and thanks for all the fish! visits!
Oliver
